Telehealth has become a common way for Australians to access GP care, particularly for those with busy schedules, limited mobility, or who live outside major metro areas. If you have not used a telehealth service before, it is natural to wonder how the process compares to an in-person visit. Here is a general guide to what is involved.
The process typically begins with an online questionnaire, where you provide relevant background about your health and the reason for your consultation. This information helps your practitioner prepare and allows the consultation itself to be more focused.
Telehealth consultations are conducted by Ahpra-registered practitioners, in the same way as a standard GP appointment, but by phone or video rather than face to face. Your practitioner will discuss your circumstances, ask any relevant follow-up questions, and consider what options, if any, may be clinically appropriate for you. Not every consultation results in a prescription or treatment plan; this depends entirely on individual clinical assessment.
If a treatment plan is considered appropriate, your practitioner will explain what is involved. Where relevant, follow-up review may be recommended to monitor your progress over time. Telehealth is intended to complement your relationship with your regular GP, and you are encouraged to keep your regular GP informed of any care you receive through telehealth services.
Telehealth is not suitable for medical emergencies. If you are experiencing a medical emergency, call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department immediately.
Telehealth consultations offer a convenient, accessible way to speak with a registered practitioner, but individual suitability and outcomes always depend on your specific circumstances as assessed by your practitioner.

All services are provided following consultation with an AHPRA-registered medical practitioner and are subject to individual clinical assessment. Treatment options are not suitable for everyone and will only be considered where clinically appropriate. This service is not suitable for medical emergencies or urgent medical conditions. If you require immediate medical assistance, call 000 or attend your nearest emergency department.
